Will and Anna

Newlyweds in Paris.

Last month, I met up with Will and Anna in Paris. They just moved there, and I was there for work. They got married recently, so I asked if I could photograph them.

We took my favorite walk in Paris — from Bastille down to the river along Bassin de l’Arsenal, and then toward Ile de la Cité on the river. That walk takes you down Quai Henri IV, which is where Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy conclude their walk in Before Sunset. This is where we sat down in the sunset light for some photos — which aren’t meant to be a homage to the film, but sort of wound up that way.

I felt really lucky to take these pictures of my friends. I’ve always wanted to make something in the world. When I was young, I wanted to be an architect so I could build big buildings. Later, I wanted to be an activist change the law. As I got older, I realized that my view was too big. It’s really hard to create something you’re proud of. How do you know that you’ve done something good? But if I could take a picture, a nice picture, of a friend, which captures a memory that we can share, that would make me happy.

So, that’s what this is: a photo of my good friends who got married and then moved to Paris, where we got together one spring evening to have a beer on the Seine.
